I just love this place! It's really the only place to get an ice cream sundae in Rapid City (in my opinion). They have awesome Palmer Dogs and huge sundaes! There are so many great sundae options it's difficult to choose. I visit this place at least once every time I'm in the Black Hills. It's a great stop for a quick lunch or a sweet treat!

Armadillos has been a stable of Rapid City for years. I remember going here as a child, the ice cream and treats are phenomenal! The only bad part is that there is usually a line, but that's a good sign that it's worth the wait! I hope Armadillos never closes!

I love armadillos. For soft serve in a small town it's my favorite. Price is kind of high for soft serve but toe it's worth it. They don't cheap out on the sprinkles. They have three flavors for soft serve, chocolate, vanilla, and the flavor of the day. They also have various shakes and sundaes.

Def a great place to stop by on a hot day. Lots of options and combos to choose from; the s'mores, Oreo and banana split sundaes are pretty sweet, but super creamy and savory. good things: there are options for those who can't eat dairy & food items FOUR STARS BECAUSE HOW DO YOU GUYS NOT HAVE FRIES?!?

In our travels, Yelp never lets us down. Armadillo's is def a local favorite. The menu is varied and the end product above average. It's above average fast food. We both had Palmer dogs. The only downside is the vanilla milkshake was more like soft serve ice cream. We will return if the mood strikes us.

Pros: Much more variety than your typical dairy queen. Two largest sizes are huge and a real bang for the buck.. and your blood sugar. Cons: Not that much different from a Dairy Queen. I ordered a Grasshopper which was indistinguishable from the Dairy Queen version except it was more bland, with less mint and no detectable malt flavor and less Oreo cookies. If you do order something I suggest not something Dairy Queen already offers and make sure to ask for it strong. The food was nothing special.. the buns were fast food buns and the sandwiches not really worth the price charged. For someone visiting from out of state.. I would rather have gotten something from Cold Stone Creamery personally.. I love their cake batter shakes and rich premium ice cream. For the price they charge for their sandwiches, I'd spend a dollar more and get a double butterburger from Culver's or spend half as much and just hit up Burger King. I'm not saying their soft serve is bad.. it's just like Dairy Queen so if you like Dairy Queen (which I do) and you like enormous sized blizzards.. it's worth a try. :)

Super old school, in the best way! There are a million menu options and my 8 y.o. was pleased as punch to get a substantially size (even tho size small) root beer float. I was happy that the prices were so reasonable and the quantities so generous. In a (misguided) effort to be healthy, I ordered the "Italian ice." Why the quotation marks? Because it wasn't Italian ice. I expected it to be a non-dairy, sorbet-like substance, but it tasted super artificial and dairy-based. It was really gross. I would've preferred an Icee or Slurpee if I was going for full-fake. Regardless, the hubs had a malted caramel shake or something like that and loved it. And I went back and re-ordered and got a soft-serve cone w/ their homemade softserve. That was more like it! I ordered a small (even smaller sizes were "baby" and "toddler") which was MONSTROUS. It was yummy and hit the spot. So enjoy Armadillo's and its throw-back style/menu. Just don't try to be healthy. Just go for it.

Love this old fashioned soft serve ice cream shop in Rapid City. Outside and inside counter service. Tables inside and out for seating. Typical soft serve options, plus shakes and other specials. I had the fresh peaches and vanilla ice cream. Perfect on a hot summer afternoon.

Delicious place! We waited in a huge line outside but then realized we could have gone inside to order...so beware of that! We got a brownie caramel sundae and it was to die for. My husband got the strawberry butter ice cream and he loved it as well, but I am not a strawberry fan. Great ice cream and a fun outside atmosphere in charming downtown Rapid City.

Be prepared to stand in line on a hot day! We were tourists in town and having found NO OTHER ICE CREAM SHOP downtown (odd!), we stumbled across a huge line at Armadillo's. Is this the best ice cream ever? Of course not. But it's the atmosphere, and the divey little place on the corner, and the people, and the dogs and everything else that makes it the right place to be. My son and I had a couple of vanilla/chocolate twists (didn't feel like having the flavor of the day - Strawberry Butter). My husband decided to get a shake. And he got the Jumbo size of the Grasshopper shake. Let me tell you - it was JUMBO. To the point where I think his eyes were filled with Oreos at the very end. :) Go, enjoy. They've got lots of fun flavors to try. Even Maple Nut, if you're into that sort of thing!

I read about this place online and lead a group to find it. Main Street got less busy and light as we walked, and I was starting to have doubts, but as soon as we spotted the sign for Armadillo's, we saw a big crowd. This place is clearly a local favorite. It reminded me of a smaller Ted Drewes (in St. Louis). The walk to the far end of Main Street is definitely worth it for this delicious, delightful local gem. In addition to small/medium/large sizes, they also have toddler and even baby sizes for folks who want to sample Armadillo's but don't have a big appetite.

Awesome ice cream place. You'll likely hafta wait in line---but soooo worth it. Lauren's Landslide.....wowza!!! Super yummy!! Best cookie dough around!! Totally :) like totally

Great Ice Cream! Flavors are great and really flavorful! They have a ton of toppings for sundaes or you can get just cones. It is a soft serve place that makes their own ice cream. Good stuff, highly recommend. Their lines are long, but they get you through quick. Their prices are also very cheap comparatively. Well worth the stop.

Nothing is more fun than a seasonal dessert shop!

Best place for ice cream in rapid hands down. Recommend the ranger Rick or the raspberry slush whip.

Terrific local ice cream shop and sandwich stand. Apparently everybody who lives in Rapid City comes here on hot summer nights; we saw lots of locals meeting up and chatting in line. The line moves fast and the various ice cream malt/shake/sundae concoctions are great, especially when it's 86F outside, which it was.

This place takes me back, and that is why I love it. No, it's not 31 million flavors, but what they do, they do well. Armadillios provides a simple, yet tasty menu. They have a few flavors of soft serve, which change daily. My favorites are anything that includes tart fruit, kiwi, lemon, lime, peach. They also make some amazingly tasty malts and shakes. Thick, creamy and huge! The other aspect I enjoy about Armadillos is the atmosphere. They have indoor and outdoor seating, and often times you end up sharing with others. I love to chat with new faces, so Armadillos has a set up I love. So, if you are rolling through Rapid City in the summer time, make this a stop on your route.

Armadillo's is the absolute best ice-cream shoppe in the greater North American region, and is rather modest despite the fact. While they are closed during those cold winter months, they make up for it due to the pounds of home-made sherbert you will ingest through-out the other seasons. I myself look forward to March 1st of every year, as if it were my own birthday. While their prices have gone up roughly $0.25/year on and off for a while, they still remain the best in the midwest for the price and for the TASTE. Hungry? Stop in and an Indian Taco, footlong, or one of the many gourmet tasty sandwiches. They are known for their soup during the cold months, and pumpkin sherbert to name a few. When peaches are in season, make sure to get anything with peaches. Honestly just come eat here and be in bliss.

I love this place! Few things bring me more joy than seeing my favorite flavor advertised on the marquee (i.e. Strawberry Butter, Tootie Fruitie, Strawberry Cheesecake). It has a great vibe and you get a real sense of community there. And as far as value goes, it blows DQ and Culvers out of the water. Just make sure you bring cash or check.

When I lived in Rapid City I always kept my eye on a very important sign during the summer. After all what it announced could change the course of my day. I'm talking about the big sign that announces the daily sherbet flavor at Armadillo's. The soft serve sherbet flavors rotate through a wild assortment of flavors: keylime, coffee, coconut , blackberry, cinnamon.... The list goes on. If you're the plan-ahead type and don't like being surprised, Armadillo's prints out little sheets of paper with the upcoming flavors that they'll be glad to give you if you ask. But even if you're the spontaneous type be prepared and have cash on you since they only take cash and local checks. (If you've got no cash there's an ATM behind the Black Hills Credit Union that's right across the street.) It's not about Ben and Jerry's style ice cream, so if you go in expecting that you'll wonder what the fuss is about. Sure you'll end up with decent ice cream, but nothing out of the ordinary. If you go with the spirit of the place and try the sherbet of the day you'll have a more unique experience. You can get the sherbet swirled with vanilla or by itself in a cone or cup. They also sell to-go pints. Yum.

I'm sorry. I want to love this Mom-n-Pop place but I can't. Not while there are other Mom-n-Pop places that are so much better, namely Zesto's in Nebraska and Tastee's Inn and Out also in Nebraska or the Maid Rite in Illinios. There's nothing unique about it. You walk up and order 1950's style through a screen. The food is terrible. The ice cream is just OK. It's a shame the place on the west side, the Nordic name escapes me, ever went out of business while this place thrives. Go figure.

There was a long line every time we drove by, so we made a point of trying the place. It's soft-serve ice cream, not very strongly flavored. I suspect it's better in a sundae or shake than as a plain cone, which is how I had it -- I did notice (too late) that most of the customers had ordered sundaes or shakes, at any rate. I preferred Culver's.
(3)PB K.
This is by far my favorite place to get sherbert, ever. It's always busy because the ice cream is phenomenal. The daily flavor is a great way to widen your horizons and try out things you usually wouldn't. My only other iced favorites are Jeni's ice cream in Ohio, and Capogiro gelato in Philadelphia, but I always love coming back to Armadillo's.

Someone really needs to open a new ice cream shop in Rapid if the folks here think this place is the bomb...... soft serve.... mediocre flavors....definitely not outstanding.....or maybe I'm just used to better fare as I'm from California where ice cream shops make their own ice cream and frozen yogurt shops have unique flavors and an abundance of toppings. Bottom line: I'd rather eat at a chain like Baskin Robbins than here.

This seems to be a good place for a soft serve based ice cream treat. They have some unique flavor combinations and their price was OK. The kids liked it, but what kid doesn't like ice cream???
